Representatives of at least 20 Latin American and Caribbean countries are attending in this capital the First Latin American Beekeeper Meeting and the Cuban congress of that specialty.

Regional technicians, specialists, and businesspeople will meet until Friday on market issues and chemical pollution of honeycomb areas, Cuban Beekeeper Association (SAC) President Martha Vazquez Luaces said.

She also said other issues of interest are related to improvement of quality, diversification of products, and propositions to create the Latin American Apiarist Society, which will contribute to integration of its members.

International Apiculture Society Federation (APIMONDIA) President Theodore Cherbulies will give the first lecture of the event, which includes the National Festival about honey, to be held on Friday at the Agricultural Fair venue in Boyeros, a municipality of this capital.

Cuba uses honey in hospitals, and propolios in therapies for scar tissue formation on wounds or burns.

The Island achieved its largest production since 1990 in 2006, and those products are mainly exported to Europe.

The Cervantes Cultural Institute in Damascus, Syria, honored the poetry of Cuban National Poet Nicolas Guillen.

The homage consisted of a conference by Cuban Ambassador Claudio Ramos Borrego and reading of poems recorded in the late poet’s voice.

Present at the homage were Syrian VP Najah Al-Attar, Latin American diplomats, Syrian Ministry of Culture officials, artists, the Cuban community and Syrian graduates at Cuban universities.

Nicolas Guillen (1902-1989) was born in Camagüey and since his early youth showed a strong liking of culture and politics. The Cuban poet was also a diplomat in the early days of the Cuban Revolution.

America lives a new era and Rafael Correa s inauguration in Ecuador shows the creation of a left-wing and progressive thought, Cuban Vice President Carlos Lage said in this capital on Monday.

Presidents like Hugo Chavez (Venezuela), Evo Morales (Bolivia) and Daniel Ortega (Nicaragua) “represent a totally different way of thinking with social emphasis,” Lage told press after in this capital where he will attend Correa s inauguration.

The Cuban leader, who was welcomed by a crowd of Ecuadorians in the outskirts of Mariscal Sucre air base, stated that progressive deep thought has emerged in Latin America to solve peoples needs.

Lage stressed that Correa s victory in the November 26 presidential elections is another expression of the new times this continent lives, where traditional systems have practically run out.

The visitor, who met with Cuban health, sports and education collaborators in the island embassy to this country, is expected to hold talks with outgoing President Alfredo Palacio and the incoming Correa.

Cuba is celebrating Science Day on Monday, when the highest national price, the Carlos J. Finlay Order, will be awarded. Carlos J. Finlay was the discoverer of the yellow fever transmitting agent.

On January 15, 1960 Cuban President Fidel Castro made the point that the future of Cuba had to be necessarily a future of scientists.

By 1995, 62,738 employees worked in Cuban scientific activities and 4,984 degrees in science were earned.

The number of workers increased to 79,087, while 8,994 people received degrees in 2005.

Today, the island boasts two scientists and or engineers for each one thousand inhabitants.

First vice president of Cuba s Institute of Friendship with the Peoples, Enrique Roman, expressed gratitude for the Venezuelan people s demonstrated solidarity with the cause of the five Cuban anti-terrorists imprisoned in the US.

Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labañino, Rene Gonzalez, Antonio Guerrero, and Fernando Gonzalez, were arrested in September 1998 for monitoring Miami terrorist groups responsible for the death of over 3,000 Cubans along almost five decades.

Roman told Prensa Latina that his visit to Venezuela allowed him to get first-hand information on the work of solidarity with Cuban movements, which he called tremendous.

The task they have performed is noteworthy, he stated, adding the most interesting thing are the results of those meetings.

Roman also emphasized that Cuba-Venezuela solidarity will continue growing, and praised the work of the Venezuelan Network of Public Libraries for spreading the word about The Five, as they are internationally known.
