Church to US: Open Prison Doors for Five
The Cuban Council of Churches (CIC) publicly asked the US government to open the prison doors for the five Cuban antiterrorism fighters, so they can be visited by their relatives for Christmas.
A letter signed by the Evangelical Theology Seminary, Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Center and CIC Studies Center urges US authorities to allow visitation during this sacred time.
Using biblical Christmas texts, especially the Gospel of St. Luke, the letter particularly refers to the suffering the Bush administration has caused Adriana Perez and Olga Salanueva, and Olga s two daughters.
Perez and Salanueva are Gerardo Hernandez and Rene Gonzalez wives, respectively; these two men, together with Fernando Gonzalez, Antonio Guerrero and Ramon Labanino, have been unfairly imprisoned in the United States since 1998 for fighting against terrorism.
“Approaching Christmas Eve, we ask US authorities to permit Adriana Perez and Olga Salanueva to accompany Rene s two daughters and visit their husbands.” This request was also made last year, but the Bush government did not accept it.
In a declaration published The Guardian, Salanueva denounced the “United States continuously and arbitrarily denies me the possibility of visiting Rene. There is no justification for these refusals.”
