Cuban Workers Elect New Union Leadership
The 19th Congress of the Cuban Workers Confederation (CTC) elected Salvador Valdes Mesa as the new General Secretary of the island’s labor organization during the closing session of the event, which was presided over by CubaĆ’s Vice President Raul Castro Ruz.
Valdes Mesa (61) is a member of the Cuban Communist Party Central Committee; he is also an agronomic engineer and was a union leader for fifteen years, reported de local national news agency (ACN).

Largest Cuban Grass Roots Org Turns 46
The Committee for the Defense of the Revolution, Cubas largest popular organization, is celebrating its 46th anniversary since founding, with the commitment to extend political and social work nationwide.
Cuban leaders recognize that the CDR’s tasks are ever more comprehensive and necessary as, apart from mobilizing the people in activities for defense, they facilitate the work of other social organizations and institutions.

Russia-Cuba Talks and Signing of Accords
First Cuban Vice President Raul Castro and Russian head of government Mihail Fradkov held talks today and later presided over the signing of five bilateral documents.
Both officials were present at the signing ceremony in the Palace of the Revolution of the agreement on the restructuring of Cuban debt to the Russian Federation, made up of credits issued years ago by Russia to the island.

Che Guevara Daughter Ends Peru Visit
Aleida Guevara, the daughter of mythical Argentine-Cuban guerrilla Ernesto Che Guevara, concluded her nine-day visit to Peru on Thursday, having received proof of solidarity from various local social and political sectors.
During her stay in the Andean country, the pediatrician toured San Pablo leper colony, where her father collaborated in 1952, when he undertook a trip around the subcontinent with his friend Alberto Granados.

Cuba Calls to Defend Diversity
Cuban Culture Minister Abel Prieto, meeting with Ecuadorian groups Thursday, called to defend cultural diversity and join efforts to achieve Latin American unity against fascism and the hegemonic monopolies.
In his meeting with Ecuadorian groups in solidarity with Cuba, intellectuals, and communicators, Prieto highlighted the need to strengthen the study of cultural roots.
