Friends and supporters of Cuba held an activity in Philadelphia Wednesday, to honor the 53rd anniversary of the attack on the Moncada Garrison on July 26, 1953, marking the start of the Cuban Revolution led by President Fidel Castro.

Lillian Halloway, a young woman from Philadelphia currently studying in Havana´s Latin American School of Medicine, extolled Cuba´s efforts to make quality healthcare available for all people, even the poorest communities.

That program trains doctors throughout Latin America without cost, asking in return only that they serve communities with economic difficulties upon graduation.

The meeting was a pledge to international solidarity as much as it was a protest against imperialism. As they put it, “shoulder to shoulder we struggle with our brothers from Cuba, Venezuela, and Bolivia against imperialism.”

Members of the African National Congress in Solidarity with Cuba, the International Action Center, Cuba Solidarity, Philadelphia Free the Five, and Philadelphia Africans, not only referred to Havana´s long history of support for Latin American nations, but also spoke of ventures in Venezuela, Bolivia and Nicaragua to improve living conditions in their respective countries.
