Six years after the return of the boy Elian Gonzalez to Cuba, the political offensive carried out by Cubans since 1999 presages the failure of Washington´s old-fashioned hostile policy against the Caribbean Island.

According to local analysts, on June 28, 2000, when Elian descended from a plane in his father Juan Miguel´s arms in Havana, the first combat of what Cuban authorities have called the Battle of Ideas was won.

The child, born in Cardenas, a municipality in the western Cuban province of Matanzas, was taken out of the country illegally by his mother, who died after the makeshift boat on which they sailed out for the United States capsized.

The actions taken to bring the boy home contributed to oxygenating the old demand for Washington to lift the over-four-decade-old economic blockade and to derogate the monstrous legal instrument that encourages Cubans to migrate illegally to the United States.
