Cuban President Fidel Castro sent Sunday his condolences to the family of late revolutionary leader Schafik Handal and the leadership of the Farabundo Marti Front for National Liberation (FMLN) in El Salvador.

“Schafik was a great captain for workers, a great revolutionary leader, an extraordinary human being,” highlights the letter read by Jaime Crombet, member of the Cuban Communist Party Central Committee, during Handal’s funeral rites.

“The Cuban party, government and people,” adds the message, “have always admired Schafik for his sturdy personality, his dedication to justice, progress, his sense of homeland and our America.”

“Cuba is proud to have had him among the most generous and combative friends. We will never forget his brave speech in defense of the Cuban revolution and firm response to the empire’s aggressions against our nation,” continues the letter.

“The world is paying tribute to one who has always lived with dignity, faithful to his principles, without giving up his ideas,” says Fidel Castro’s message, that was read to a crowd of over 800 people gathered at El Salvador University’s Faculty of Law.

“Schafik will continue among us because his admirable life will be an example for the peoples’ struggles for social justice, independence and peace,” concludes the message of sympathy.

Delegations from 20 countries are in this country to attend FMLN leader’s burial this Sunday.
