Cuba will modify free software programs to make them more suitable for its education system, said Education Ministry (MINED) tactician Carlos Exposito.

In a seminar in Bayamo, eastern Cuba, where local specialists are being trained to operate the Caiman version of the free software LINUX, the official explained the joint work of MINED and the Ministry of Informatics.

LINUX, an easily utilized system, was created twenty years ago and the Island uses more than 1,500 units.

The joint experts have developed 200 uses, suiting both education and its network, with an open code enabling adaptation of the program to particular needs.

Exposito compared this possibility to corporate-owned software that demand royalties and ban changes to the programs.

Cuba expects to promote cooperation and broad access to services and technologies and free software, like LINUX, best suits its educational plan.
