Cuba Gets Ready for New Anti-Polio Campaign
Havana.- Cuba’s health system is ready to kick off a new nationwide vaccination campaign against poliomyelitis among children, as part of the country’s immunization program.
According to experts, the 45th Vaccination Campaign will begin in late February to prevent poliomyelitis, which is caused by a virus that can cause atrophy of the limbs and paralysis.
During the first stage, the vaccine will be administered orally to children under three years of age. A second dose will be administered later and 9-year-old children will have their vaccine reactivated.
Sources from the Ministry of Public Health said that some 500,000 children will be immunized against poliomyelitis.
Officials from the National Vaccination Program explained that since the first immunization campaign was carried out to date, more than eight million Cubans have been vaccinated against that disease.
